"School's out, for summer...!" – ALICE COOPER – Yes, school is out for summer here at Palmer Trinity School. With the advent of summer comes the excitement and eager anticipation of what might unfold. Consider the words of the great writer, Harper Lee, taken from my all-time favorite book, To Kill a Mockingbird: "Summer was our best season: it was sleeping on the back screened porch in cots, or trying to sleep in the tree house; summer was everything good to eat; it was a thousand colors in a parched landscape." Yes indeed, the possibilities of summer are endless. Maybe you'll wake up a little later in the morning, having shut the alarm clock off for the entire week. Maybe you'll finally begin that book you've been planning to read since September. Maybe you'll re-connect with an old friend and stay up extra late, passing the time by swapping those ever enlightening "Glory Days" stories. Maybe you'll catch a mid-afternoon movie, taking a much-needed break from the humidity and heat of the day. Maybe you'll crank up the volume a little louder, playing your favorite summer song just one more time. Maybe you'll find yourself in a foreign land, visiting exotic sights unseen, or simply soaking in the comfortable surroundings of home. Maybe you'll take a leisurely stroll or go for a run, enjoying the freedom and privilege of solitude, and the mindfulness it can bring. Maybe you'll visit family and spend some overdue time catching up with one another, enjoying an extra laugh or two. Maybe you'll pursue a new hobby, or find the time to start an activity, sparking your creative juices. Maybe you'll finally get around to fixing that leaky faucet. Maybe you'll pass the day away by simply doing nothing. Whatever you choose, this time of the year provides a natural pause to the busy cycle of our crazy lives. Summertime means moving a little more slowly, decompressing a bit, and letting your mind wander, allowing yourself to just be. Here on campus, we'll be hosting Summer Camps, Breakthrough Miami, and we will be putting the finishing touches on the New Classroom Building, as well as getting our classrooms ready to shine in August. I am sure we'll have some good stories to tell upon our return, and I sincerely look forward to hearing them — and telling a few myself! For each of you, whatever you have planned this summer, I wish you many opportunities to disconnect, rest, and revive. As American businessman and author, Alan Cohen, so notes, "There is virtue in work and there is virtue in rest. Use both and overlook neither." Recognize how important it is to seek this virtue, and know how grateful I am for this community. I look forward to gathering again in August.
