PTS French Honor Society (FHS) Takes Care of the People of Lamecette, Haiti By Rohan Myers '19 and Marla Ricart '19 IN 2013, the Palmer Trinity School French Honor Society President had a vision. She wanted to use the resources of her chapter of FHS to improve the lives of the people of Haiti. She approached a Palmer Trinity teacher, to create a partnership with a school (St. Thomas School) in Lamecette, Haiti. In addition, the FHS sponsor Mme Caroline Rubeau Goodwin and Palmer Trinity's French Honor Society collectively agreed to donate all of its funds to the program. After choosing the school "with the most needs," the pioneers of the Haiti Partnership Program made their first trip. "I wanted to show the students of both schools that we had a partnership, regardless of their differing economic statuses," Mr. Gonzalez said. Since 2014, the Haiti Partnership Program and the Palmer Trinity School French Honor Society, through donations of supplies, funds from the French Honor Society, and the love of our community, have fundraised to transform a mud shed in a rural Haitian town into a durable concrete classroom with 7 rooms and accommodation for 300 students. To provide funds for this program, the French Honor Society has monthly croissant sales (raising approximately $300 each time) and hosts a food country booth (one of the largest) at Palmer Trinity's annual International Festival. The International Festival is a community- wide school event, attracting the friends and families of our 770 students, and providing cultural food booths for around 28 countries. Because of the reactions of PTS students and the blissful appreciation of the children of Lamecette, the Haiti Partnership Program has organized annual trips since 2013, with the trip's signup sheets filling up almost instantaneously. The French Honor Society is an energetic and community-minded group which takes very seriously its mission to help Haiti. Mme Goodwin states that "helping Haiti has been our labor of love for five years, and I'm so proud of the 30 plus members who all accept this mission so completely. With an outstanding group of officers again this year, I have no doubt that we can continue to make a difference, as the motto of our FHS chapter states "Un pour tous, tous pour un," which translates to "one for all, all for one."
