PTS Track: A Team Full of Heart IN THE MIDS T OF A GLOBA L PA NDEMIC, running gave this group of athletes something to work hard for and be proud of. The team started the track season with little experience, but their hard work, dedication and heart got many of them all the way to the State Championship. When the season started, the team demonstrated promising potential. With every meet that went by, members of the team kept improving and hitting new personal milestones. By the time Districts came around, several members of the team had already broken school records. At the District championship, they gave it their all, and both the girls and boys teams became District Champions. As they celebrated their win, they found a new source of motivation and set a goal to dominate at Regionals and make it all the way to the State Championship. For the next two weeks, these athletes trained harder than ever, and their dedicated coaches left no room for excuses. When they arrived at the Regional meet, they were pumped and ready to compete. The Boys team dominated and earned the Regional Championship Title, and the Girls also had their best performance of the season coming in as the Regional Runner-Up. Fifteen athletes qualified for the State Championship meet and eleven of them won 21 medals in 18 different events. Brandon Pottinger '22 finished as the FHSAA Class 1A State Champion, making him the first State Champion at PTS since 1993—a record held by Coach Tamara King '94. Overall, this team made history at PTS earning more State medals than ever and setting 21 new school records. Aside from all the medals earned by this team, their greatest accomplishment was becoming a family. Seasoned runner and team captain, George Stark '22 shares, "I love the sense of family on the track team and I feel that we all support each other well!" One of the girl captains, Daniella Perez-Cartaya '24, explains that, "Coach King is our track mom. She shows us tough love by pushing us to surpass our limits. We work hard to make her proud." Coach King, who ran for Palmer Trinity back in the early 90's, has been coaching Cross- Country and Track at PTS for the past 12 years. She was an Olympic-hopeful and shares her knowledge and experience with her runners. Coach King describes the team as having as having "an internal drive toward greatness." palmertrinity.org 20 BIRD'S EYE VIEW
