STUDENT MEDIA STATS In December, my family, who had quickly recognized my newfound passion, decided to take a chance on me: They bought me a Canon DSLR camera, a tripod, and several lenses.I utilized my break to extensively study photography and began capturing images of various subjects, including plants, birds, and sports. I actively sought opportunities to pursue my passion. I started a personal photography social media account, I began curating a photography portfolio, and I signed up for a new Advanced Broadcast independent study course outside of my other classes. I was also invited to join the PTS chapter of Quill and Scroll International Honor Society. All of these more intensive opportunities allowed me to enjoy the parts of media that once deterred me; writing articles and producing videos became something that I enjoyed. I came to realize this: Capturing moments through a lens was my way of freezing time, and something about that felt powerful. Through photography, I was able to connect with the world around me, connect with my community, and connect with a part of myself I didn't know existed before this year. I gave our Falcon Student Media program a chance and it opened a new door in my life. The program is a fairly new addition to Palmer Trinity. The program includes the Broadcast and Yearbook production courses, along with the introductory Journalism and Media in the Middle semester electives. Advanced students also have the opportunity to be invited to join Quill and Scroll. Within these courses, we get a chance to explore the world of journalism and media creation by sharing the stories of the year. Primarily student- led, the courses create hands-on opportunities for students as we produce content for a variety of media platforms: PTTV's morning show, Falcon Flash; the student news website, The Perch; the yearbook, The Raptor; and the Instagram account. Being a part of the Falcon Student Media team allows for us to try new things, whether it is anchoring, editing video, designing a yearbook spread, interviewing subjects, or even hosting a podcast. As student journalists, we are constantly pushing past our comfort zones. As we tear down these barriers, we are able to create connections with those around us, which is undoubtedly a pillar of the media program. By learning how to become effective journalists, we build connections with each other in the classroom. Through our interviews and our photography, we foster connections within our community. And by publishing and broadcasting our work, we inspire our audience to find meaningful connections with the unique and vibrant individuals all around us. 1 "Best of SNO" recognition 2 Zoom lenses available for student journalists 4 DSLR cameras available for student media use 4 Elective offerings in student media program 17 Members of Quill and Scroll Honor Society Scan to watch episodes of Falcon Flash!
