MICHAEL CONTRERAS writes, "I have been involved now for six years with Mindo Futures, an organization that empowers the youth and rural community of Mindo, Ecuador through educational and health programs in an effort to end poverty. I started helping just by collecting funds and helping to pack medicines until I was able to actually go on the medical mission as a non-medical volunteer. Once I did, I instantly knew that that is where I was meant to be. Since then I have gone on the medical mission three times and I am now on the Mindo Futures Board of Directors. Each year I try to put even more effort than before to help the amazing people of Mindo, and the great kids that go to the school there. My brother Manuel Contreras '06 also went last year, and our home hosted all the medicine packing events. Mindo has truly become part of our family, and we dedicate ourselves more and more to it. The people of Mindo are incredibly humble and they're so happy to see us every year. It would be a dishonor to them to not put 100% of myself into helping them. That is why we started the Mindo Futures Golf Classic in order to keep raising funds and double the help we give to the kids in the UEFTE school year-round. It's a great event at Melreese Golf Club on November 4 th . Lots of Palmer Trinity Alumni came and played last year. We also have amazing sponsors that make it such a fun event, and we are always looking for more! I am really looking forward to this year's tournament. I may be the world's worst golfer but I can't think of a more enjoyable way to spend a day among good friends for a great cause. It makes losing all those balls in the water worth it! Hope to see many of you there."
